I have been following the nest for a few weeks and was delighted to take some video and photographs of four young cygnets today as they made their way downstream at Caldecotte.
Four cygnets have hatched, leaving two eggs behind in the nest. I assume they will not make it as the young need to be in the water as soon as possible to protect them from land-based hunters such as foxes or from other birds such as Heron.
The remaining two eggs will not be cared for or kept warm so their chances will be small.
This slide show video shows the cygnets and their parents making their way downstream at the river at Caldecotte Lake. Accompanying the video are more intimate photographs of the young birds feeding and enjoying their first days of life.
