Capturing Light & Warmth: A Hanukkah Celebration at Bletchley Park

December’s chill couldn’t dim the warmth of the Milton Keynes Jewish community’s public Hanukkah celebration at Bletchley Park. I was honoured to photograph and film this special event, documenting everything from the heartfelt speeches and the poignant Menorah lighting to the vibrant entertainment and the audience’s joyful reactions.

My challenge was multifaceted: covering indoor and outdoor elements with the looming threat of rain, setting up video equipment unobtrusively, and ensuring high-standard audio and video capture. The same principles apply to photography, especially capturing compelling images in darkness and within the main venue.

The celebration began outside, where Rabbi Yosef led the Menorah lighting ceremony. Stepping into the crisp, dark December evening, I captured the spectacle of the flickering candlelight against Bletchley Park’s iconic backdrop, focusing on the expressions of reverence and joy.

After the outdoor ceremony, we moved inside. The atmosphere shifted to a lively gathering of friends, old and new. I focused on capturing the joy of reconnection and the shared moments of celebration, with the historical surroundings adding a unique dimension to the evening.

The indoor entertainment was vibrant, and I worked to capture the energy and spirit of the gathering. Throughout the night, I moved between the indoor and outdoor spaces, ensuring that all aspects of the celebration were documented. Photographing and filming in the winter months presented unique challenges, but also opportunities to capture the contrast between the warm, indoor light and the cold, dark outside.

It was a privilege to document this special public Hanukkah celebration for the Milton Keynes Jewish community at Bletchley Park. The images and video I captured, despite the challenges, will serve as a lasting reminder of the joy and unity shared on this memorable evening.
